Discover how to better support our international community in this dynamic workshop series designed for CSU staff and faculty. Through a deeper understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities international students and scholars face, participants will gain practical tools to foster a supportive campus environment.

This series empowers staff and faculty to create a welcoming and enriching experience for international community, ensuring their success both inside and outside the classroom.

Complete 3 out of 5 sessions to receive an ‘International Community Advocate’  certificate and decal.

SPRING 2026 SEssions:

Thursday, February 5th, 2:00-3:30 pm

Presenter: Lisa Pappas, Associate Director, International Student Success and Retention

Focusing on the diverse cultural perspectives international students bring and exploring strategies to strengthen intercultural awareness and communication.


Thursday, February 19th, 2:00-3:30 pm

Presenter: Rochelle Breen (they/them/theirs) Senior International Student & Scholar Advisor   

Covering the international student journey before and after arrival, including visa processes, arrival, and campus acclimation.


Thursday, March 12th, 10:00-11:30 am

Presenter: Alan Boyd, Senior International Student & Scholar Advisor

Addressing the unique rules and challenges international students face regarding on- and off-campus work, internships, and career planning.


Tuesday, March 24th, 10:00-11:30 am

Presenter: Dr. Laura Arcila Villa, International Student & Scholar Advisor

A session geared toward faculty, offering insights into how international students engage in academic settings and strategies for inclusive teaching.


Tuesday, April 7th, 9:00-10:00 am

Presenter: Dr. Sara Anne Tompkins, Associate Dean for Student Services in the Graduate School

A session that offers faculty guidance on how to respond when a graduate student is experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, or thoughts of self-harm or harm to others, and outlines your legal responsibilities in these situations.
