Every traveler to the UK who doesn’t have a UK or Irish passport is required to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) online prior to departure. ETA is required regardless of the length of time in the UK, even for connecting flights.

U.S. citizens who will be receiving credit while in the United Kingdom for 6 months or less can obtain entry clearance as a Student Visitor at point of entry upon arrival in UK, restricted to no extension and no work. A pre-issued visa is not required.

U.S. citizens who will be receiving credit while in UK for 6 months or less and may want to extend, and/or need or would like permission to work part time (paid or unpaid, including internships) must obtain a Student Visa prior to departing the United States.

U.S. citizens who will be receiving credit while in UK for more than 6 months must obtain a Student Visa prior to departing USA. This visa includes permission to work part time, including internships.
