If you are a US citizen who will be receiving academic credit while in Spain for 90 days or more, you must obtain a student visa (stamped in passport), in advance of your travel, through the consulate with jurisdiction for your state of residence or state where you attend college or university (residents of Colorado will use the Los Angeles consulate). If you are not a US citizen, you must consult with the Embassy of Spain for the immigration requirements for citizens of your country.

Normally, an in-person appearance by appointment at the appropriate Spanish consulate is required to submit a visa application, which should be done 60-120 days prior to the student’s scheduled flight departing the USA.

Students must submit applications in person by appointment at the appropriate consulate in a timely manner (unless a program provider representative will present visa applications in person on behalf of its program participants). Alternatively, a parent/guardian with power of attorney can submit the visa application in person by appointment on the student’s behalf.

A student visa is not required for summer programs in Spain, because summer programs are less than 90 days in duration.

Cost of student visa: As of July 15, 2015, the visa application fee is $160 for US passports. Additional costs include travel for personal appearance of student, parent, or education abroad representative and prepaid traceable return envelope. Check rates at the United States Postal Service.
