The following information applies to U.S. citizens intending to study for credit in Germany. If you are not a U.S. citizen, seek information from German authorities, such as the German Embassy or Consulate in the United States, for the immigration requirements for citizens of your country.

Students who are US citizens can enter the Schengen States region of continental Europe, including Germany, for 90 days without a preissued visa in their passport. US students studying in Germany for more than 90 days can obtain a Residence Permit after arrival. Optionally, they can obtain the Residence Permit from the appropriate German consulate prior to departing USA, but most wait until after arrival. Colorado is within the jurisdiction of the consulate in Los Angeles. Students who are not citizens of USA, Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland, or the European Union, must obtain a Residence Permit prior to arrival in Germany.
