Scholarship Resources:

There are many scholarships and grant monies available to students that can be applied education abroad programs. Be sure to check with the Office of Financial Aid to determine how your specific scholarships may be applied to your education abroad program. In addition, recipients of private scholarships need to check with the issuing agency to determine if these may be applied toward the education abroad program of your choice.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study abroad. It provides awards for students receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two year or four year college or university.

Boren Awards for International Study: Scholarships and Fellowships

Boren Scholarships and Fellowships provide funding for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study in world regions that are underrepresented in study abroad and critical to the future security of the United States.

Bridging Scholarships for Study Abroad in Japan

The US-Japan Bridging Foundation has provided scholarships since 1999 through the American Association of Teachers of Japanese to assist students to study in Japan.

British Universities Transatlantic Exchange Association (BUTEX)

Each year BUTEX, awards a number of scholarships to students studying abroad for either a semester or for a whole academic year.

Critical Language Scholarship Program

The CLS Program is funded by the U.S. Government and implemented by non-profit American Councils for International Education. The CLS Program provides immersive summer programs for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to learn languages of strategic importance to the United State including Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili.

DAAD-Germany

DAAD offers a wide range of funding opportunities for individuals in a variety of study, research and internship experiences in Germany.

Dante Allegheri Society of Denver

The Dante Alighieri Society of Denver awards scholarships to college students attending institutions in the Denver metropolitan area or northeastern Colorado who are studying Italian language, literature, history, music, and art.

Davis Putter Scholarship Fund

To be eligible for the Davis Putter Scholarship, you need to be involved in movements for progressive social changeand demonstrate financial need. Funding may be considered for study abroad if it directly relates to ongoing social justice work, but primary requirement includes enrollment in a US degree, technical, or training program.

The Diverse International Women Of Color Study Abroad Scholarship

The DIWC Study Abroad Scholarship assists women of color who are exceptional in their studies and in need of financial assistance to study abroad. Applicants must be accepted to an in-Person study abroad program or study abroad international internship (must receive college credit).

Freeman-ASIA

Freeman-ASIA is designed to support U.S.-based undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia.

Fulbright Program

The Fulbright program offers grants to study, teach and conduct research for U.S. citizens to go abroad and non-U.S. citizens to come to the United States.

Fund for Education Abroad

FEA is committed to increasing the opportunities for dedicated American students to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs.

Gilman-McCain Scholarship

The U.S. Department of State’s Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for undergraduate child dependents of active duty service members to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs.

The Going Abroad Scholarship 

The Going Abroad Scholarship (formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights) is open to any citizen and/or resident of the United States (and its territories and possessions) who is enrolled full-time at an accredited institution of higher learning.  

HI USA

HI USA’s General Explore the World Travel Scholarship is awarded to applicants who demonstrate financial need for international travel for education or service. The Explore the World Travel Scholarship: First Passport Edition is a stipend for passport fees, flights, and hostel accommodations awarded to applicants who have never had a passport.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund

Can be used for any program in which tuition is paid to the home university (typically exchanges or faculty-led programs). Plan to enroll full-time in an accredited, public or not-for-profit, four-year university, or graduate school in the US for the upcoming academic year. Applicants must complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Japan America Society of Colorado (JASC) Rikai Scholarships

JASC’s mission is to expand people to people relationships between Colorado and Japan. One of the ways they achieve this is by offering annual scholarships to students studying abroad in Japan. Amount vary annually and students must be a permanent resident of Colorado in order to be eligible.

Joy Worldwide Inc.

The Joy Worldwide Inc. scholarship program is designed to support up to 45 undergraduate students each year. To qualify, applicants must be accepted into a study abroad program lasting three months or more. Finalists will be invited for an interview. Joy Worldwide Inc. is a non-profit corporation that provides education, advocacy, and scholarship programs for African American students pursuing study abroad opportunities.

The Korea Society Travel Grants

The Korea Society offers undergraduate study abroad travel grants of up to $2,000 to students studying in Korea for a semester or academic year. These awards support their commitment to promoting greater awareness, understanding, and cooperation between people from the U.S. and Korea.

Learning Beyond Borders: A Ling Scholarship

This scholarship supports students accepted into study abroad programs in any country (non-English-speaking countries preferred but not required). Scholarships range from $200 to $1,000. 

Order of Sons and Daughters of Italy in America

Dedicated to U.S. citizens and Green Card holders of Italian descent* enrolled in a four-year undergraduate program, graduate program, or a professional school at an accredited academic institution. Monetary awards are presented directly to the student’s academic institutions in accordance with eligibility requirements – Eligible for CSU SFL Programs. *at least one Italian or Italian American grandparent.

OUT to Innovate

The Out to Innovate™ Scholarships are intended for LGBTQ+ undergraduate students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) programs. The scholarships are designed to promote academic excellence and increased visibility of talented LGBTQ+ students in STEM careers.

The Rainbow Scholarship

In partnership with FEA, the Rainbow SIG established the Rainbow Scholarship fund to support LGBTQIA+ students. Recipients of the Rainbow Scholarship are deserving LGBTQIA+ students who aim to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs. This scholarship was created to ensure that financial constraints do not prevent LGBTQIA+ students from accessing transformative international experiences.

Rotary

Global grant scholarships for graduate students studying abroad in one of the listed areas of focus: peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene, child and maternal health improvements, supporting education, growing local economies, and protecting the environment. You can also check out local Rotary Clubs/Chapters here. District grants can be used for undergraduate or graduate programs between 6-weeks and oneyear long. 

Tortuga Backpacks

The Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship is awarded biannually to passionate students who want to explore the world. The scholarship may be used for tuition, room and board, books, or travel. Funds will be sent directly to the winner’s study abroad program or university. 

Upper Midwest Rebild Scholarship

Upper Midwest Rebild Scholarship (UMRSC) encourages American college students to study, learn about, and experience Denmark. They honor the creation of the Rebild National Park in Denmark, which serves as a symbol of Danish American heritage and friendship between the two countries. They offer scholarships that range from $1,000-$3,000 each semester to students who choose to participate in a study program in Denmark.

World at Hand

World at Hand is a Denver-based nonprofit, founded by a CSU alumnus, wanting to increase access to education abroad programs for local low-income and underrepresented students. Students must be graduates from a Denver or Aurora Public High School to apply.

Databases and Additional Resources: 

The Education Abroad Team encourages students to continue their own research into external awards. Below you will find several databases you can use in your search. We also encourage students to check their local city/state scholarship boards and organizations, connect with the Office of Scholarship and Fellowship Advising, and connect with CSU’s Cultural Resources Centers as they may often know of additional identity-based scholarships that can be used towards an education abroad experience.  

Go Overseas Scholarship

A database of multiple overseas scholarships for various locations and award amounts. Over $175,000 in scholarships are awarded annually. 

Scholarships.com Student-specific and Unique Scholarships

Scholarships.com has a scholarship for almost anything imaginable. Whether you’re an adult learner or have strong spiritual beliefs, have a passion for thinking “green” or love to dance, chances are there is at least one scholarship here that you’re eligible for.

University of Minnesota Scholarship Search

A general database of scholarships maintained by the University of Minnesota for undergraduate and graduate students looking to go abroad. Not specifically for UofM students. 

USA Study Abroad

A compiled list by the US Government of funds and scholarships information for exchange and study abroad programs for undergraduate and graduate students. The list is separated into government and privately funded scholarships for education and research. Note: privately funded programs are not exclusively for international programs but may allow for study and research abroad.
