2026 International Visiting Scholars: Program Info

Colorado State University is excited to host an International Summer Research Internship for international scholars in Summer 2026. This unique program allows you to work alongside high-achieving students and award-winning staff at CSU’s state of the art facilities to gain valuable research experience related to your area of study.

This opportunity is available to non-U.S. citizens who are entering their final year of an undergraduate degree program at an accredited international university.

The internship is designed to provide visiting scholars with the opportunity to experience the U.S. educational setting while fulfilling the educational objectives for his or her current degree program at your home institution.

You can carry this experience with you to your next educational opportunity, or use it to get a start on your educational career at CSU.

Visiting scholars will be immersed in on-campus laboratories and complete research projects for either 4 weeks, 6 weeks, or 8 weeks in fields like:

Biomedical Sciences
Business/Data Analytics/Finance
Computer Science
Engineering
Health and Human Sciences
Mathematics
Natural Resources
Natural Sciences: Biology/Molecular
Biology/Biochemistry

Program attendees will be granted a certificate upon completion. Please note that subjects cannot be guaranteed and placements will be made upon acceptance into the program following coordination with available faculty.

Program Highlights

1. Colorado State University is a Carnegie R1 Research Institution with some of the highest levels of research activity in the world. Estimated research expenditures exceeded $577 million in 2024.

2. Gain hands-on experience in world-renowned fields such as cancer research, atmospheric science, animal science, climate change, forest and wildlife management, engineering, and water management.

3. Scholars stay on campus with international interns from all around the world. The 2025 program included scholars from Jordan, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, India, and more.

4. Access to state of the art facilities and award-winning faculty create rigorous academic experiences and knowledge which can be brought back to your home institution and further your qualifications for a graduate program.

5. All participants receive a stipend worth 50% of the program’s expenses applied to their on-campus accommodations from CSU’s International Enrollment Center.

About the program

Program Duration

Depending on your starting date, you can choose between a 4-week stay, a 6-week stay, or an 8-week stay:

Starting June 1, 2026
4 weeks: June 1 – June 29
6 weeks: June 1 – July 14
8 weeks: June 1 – July 27

Starting June 15, 2026
4 weeks: June 15 – July 13
6 weeks: June 15 – July 27

*Program durations subject to faculty availability and cannot be guaranteed. Upon acceptance, CSU will help facilitate placements and program durations.

Program Costs

All accepted participants receive a CSU stipend equivalent to 50% of costs.

Estimated costs (to be paid by the scholar)*
4 week stay – ~~$3,500~~ $1,750 after stipend
6 week stay – ~~$4,600~~ $2,300 after stipend
8 week stay – ~~$5,700~~ $2,850 after stipend

Program costs include accommodations, meals, and CSU fees.

*These costs to not include the costs of airfare/transportation, SEVIS fee ($220), DS-160 fee ($185), or other other visa fees not controlled by CSU. Scholars will be responsible for paying these fees separately.

Housing Information

While on campus, you will live in a double occupancy dorm room with a roommate. Your housing deposit will include:

Two meals (per night stay, per person)
Bed and bathroom linens
On-Campus Parking (short-term stays only)
High-speed WiFi throughout campus
Courtesy desk + after hours on-call staff
Laundry facilities
Easy access to public transportation and historic Fort Collins

There will be shared showers and restrooms. Dining halls will be a short walk away from your dorm building.

Immigration Information

Visiting scholars will need to receive a form DS-2019 from Colorado State University and apply for a J-1 student intern visa in order to participate in the program. Associated costs are listed above, and CSU’s Office of International Programs will provide guided support throughout the immigration process. Accepted scholars will receive the requisite information in order to apply for a DS-2019.

Health Insurance Information

As a J-1 Exchange Visitor, all participating scholars will need to enroll in an approved short-term health insurance plan ($60-$120). Additional information can be found on our J-1 Health Insurance Requirements page.

English Requirements

A copy of official scores from one of the following English language tests taken within the last two years and meeting the stated minimum score below will be required:
TOEFL: 72
IELTS: 6.0
Duolingo: 110
