Course and Program Descriptions
During the summer program, students will participate in a number of courses and cultural activities focused on sustainability, English, and engagement in a U.S. University setting. Course topics include:
ENGLISH FOR SUSTAINABILITY
In this classroom-based course, students will improve their academic English skills by reading articles and listening to recorded lectures and videos on a variety of sustainability-related topics. They will also improve their written English skills by writing short responses to readings and lectures. In addition, students will develop their spoken English, including use of appropriate grammatical structures and pronunciation, by participating in group discussions about sustainability. Vocabulary building will be emphasized throughout this course.
SUSTAINABILITY IN ACTION
Students will use this time to prepare for the CSU and Community Engagement component of this program. In particular, they will acquire specific background information and prepare questions so that they can receive maximum benefit from the field trips and other Engagement activities. Students will also use a significant amount of class time to prepare their E-Portfolio and Presentation Assignment (described below).
CSU AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
In this course, students will interact with members of the CSU, Fort Collins, Larimer County, and greater Colorado communities who are actively and professionally engaged in sustainability issues and initiatives. Activities will include field trips to places like the Larimer County Landfill, Vindeket Food Rescue, CSU Surplus, Habitat for Humanity, Housing & Dining Services, and the CSU Power Campus. There may also be guest speakers and panel discussions featuring CSU students and faculty as well as other area professionals involved with sustainability.
E-PORTFOLIO AND PRESENTATION ASSIGNMENT
This course component allows each student to bring together all of their learning experiences about sustainability into a final academic-quality product. They will assemble photographs and other written and visual artifacts from the program into an annotated electronic portfolio, around which they will create an audio-visual technology supported presentation. This final product will allow them to display their major educational takeaways from Sustainability Summer Camp 2023 to friends, family, and future colleagues.
Cultural Activities
Since a large part of studying abroad is to learn more about that culture, PLACE will organize weekly cultural activities for the participants to engage with the local culture as well as the broader U.S. culture.
Participants will have classes in the same building as current CSU students, and there will be activities and coffee hours after class for both groups of students to play games and have conversations.
Accommodations
Students will stay in the on-campus residence hall during the program, so they will get full experience living on campus with other students. The on-campus residence hall provides free Wi-Fi, towels, linens, pillows, and on-campus parking. Each residence hall has common space which includes a lobby, TV lounge, kitchen, game room, and more.
All meals are included in the cost of the program. Students will eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner on campus during class days in the university dining halls by swiping their student ID cards. When participating in full-day cultural activities, meals will be provided.
Transportation
PLACE provides transportation to all program-sponsored activities, via either university vans or the City of Fort Collins Transfort bus system.
Participants will be responsible for their own airfare to the United States The closest airport to Fort Collins is Denver International Airport. PLACE will provide airport pick-up and drop-off for all student groups.
