About Global Village

Global Village Seminar (Required Academic Course)
A major part of the living-learning experience in Global Village is the Seminar that all students in the community are required to take. This course typically takes place in the Fall semester, and there are a few sections students can choose from when registering. Students will be challenged to take what they are learning in this course and apply it to their co-curricular activities within Global Village and across campus. This course is 2 credits, and students will register for it during Ram Orientation with the support of their academic advisor. Any questions about the Seminar should be directed to the Coordinator, Brenna, at brenna.turer@colostate.edu.

Community Hours
Students in Global Village are also required to attend Community Hours every other week on the third floor common room of Parmelee Hall (or virtually) with their peer mentors. Attending Community Hours is a part of students’ class participation grade in the GV Seminar. During Community Hours, peer mentors lead activities and discussions related to class content as well as campus life. Community Hours allow students to connect their learning from class to real-life experiences they have on campus, while building relationships with students in the community throughout the semester. During spring semester, community hours continue but they are optional for students since they will not have class in spring.

1:1 Academic Support & Engagement
Global Village community members are individually supported by a peer mentor throughout their academic year. Global Village Peer Mentors are sophomores, juniors, and seniors at CSU who have been in the community as a first-year student, and/or have a background in international studies and international communication. Students are required to meet one-to-one with a peer mentor at least two times during their first semester as a part of their class participation grade. During these meetings, students are supported by their peer mentor in planning goals for their first year that are specific to their individual experiences, and connecting them to resources and opportunities on campus.

Programs and Events
Our Community Coordinator, also a student staff member, holds community programs and events during each month throughout the year. These are completely optional for students in the community to attend, and the purpose of these programs includes community building and furthering students’ intercultural learning. In the past, students have hiked to Horsetooth, gone to laser tag, carved pumpkins, attended movie nights, cooked international foods for sharing, and more. To view programs and events currently planned, check out our calendar here.

Housing
Global Village Staff partner with CSU Housing & Dining Services to provide the best possible experience for GV residents throughout their first year at CSU. Students in Global Village live on the same floor in Parmelee Residence Hall in suite-style rooms, as the living experience is a large component of the community. Students will room with other students in the GV community, and they will be supported by Resident Assistants living on their floor, as well as the GV Community Coordinator living on their floor as well.

Additional Support
In addition to student staff, professional staff members directly support students living in the Global Village Learning Community and often meet with them one-to-one. These staff members include Brenna Turer, the Coordinator for the Global Village Learning Community, and the Residence Director of Parmelee Residence Hall, Hiba Abdeljalil.

Leadership Opportunities
Students in Global Village have the opportunity to apply to become Peer Mentors after their academic year in the Global Village Learning Community. Students can apply for the position during the Spring semester of their first year, and more information will be sent out to current students when recruitment for this position begins. Current student staff also hold other leadership positions on campus, and actively connect current students to similar opportunities for the duration of their time at CSU.
