Gender Identity & Expression

Students may experience gender identity and expression differently across cultures, and expectations abroad may not always match what you are used to at home. Studying abroad can provide opportunities for self-discovery and growth, but it is also important to understand how gender norms, laws, and cultural attitudes may impact your experience. Below are some resources to help you prepare and make informed decisions about your program and destination. You are encouraged to discuss questions with an Education Abroad advisor.

Questions to Consider:

  • What are the legal and cultural norms regarding gender identity in the host country?
  • How do local customs and social attitudes affect gender expression in public spaces?
  • How will gender identity be handled in official documentation, such as visas, passports, and residency permits?
  • Are there local LGBTQIA+ support networks in the host country?
  • What healthcare options are available in the host country?
  • Will I need access to any medications, supplies, or services to properly care for my medical needs? Are they available in my host country? If not, will I need any additional documentation to travel with me? Will it be possible to travel legally with these supplies?

Sexual Identity

Students may find that sexual identity is also understood and expressed differently across cultures. While studying abroad can be a meaningful opportunity to explore and affirm your identity, it is important to be aware of local attitudes, laws, and resources related to LGBTQIA+ communities in your host country. Below are some resources to help you prepare and navigate these considerations as you plan your experience. You are encouraged to discuss your questions with an Education Abroad advisor.
